HRC says 2020 an “Epidemic of Violence” against Trans Americans

In May, Trump implied that Gonzalo Curiel, the federal judge presiding over a class action against the for-profit Trump University, could not fairly hear the case because of his Mexican heritage.

“He’s a Mexican,” Trump told CNN of Curiel. “We’re building a wall between here and Mexico. The answer is, he is giving us very unfair rulings — rulings that people can’t even believe.”

When asked whether he would trust a Muslim judge, in light of his proposed restrictions on Muslim immigration, Trump suggested that such a judge might not be fair to him either.

Three times in a row on Feb. 28, Trump sidestepped opportunities to renounce white nationalist and former KKK leader David Duke, who told his radio audience last week that voting for any candidate other than Trump is “really treason to your heritage.”

Trump has yet to denounce white supremacists, in fact at the first Presidential debate, he sent out a rallying call to racist.

When it comes to the LGBTQ community, a recent poll suggested that three-quarters of LGBTQ Americans oppose Trump. In 2017, Trump joked about Vice President Pence’s anti-gay agenda saying “Don’t ask that guy—he wants to hang them all!” This and other abuses against LGBTQ, and legislation against the Trans community, has resulted in an unprecedented year of government attacks on the LGBTQ community according to HRC.

A record number of transgender and gender-nonconforming people – 32 – have been killed by violence this year, according to the Human Rights Campaign

Those statistics include five deaths in the past three weeks, said the LGBTQ advocacy group, which began keeping records in 2013.

But that number is likely even higher, “since many trans people killed by violence are misgendered by police and can be misreported in the media,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president of LGBTQ media advocacy group GLAAD.

“Violence facing transgender Americans, especially Black trans women, requires urgent resources and attention from the federal state, and local government agencies and elected officials,” she said.

On Oct. 7, Brooklyn Deshuna, a 20-year-old Black transgender woman, was found fatally shot in Shreveport, Louisiana. Just a day before, Felycya Harris, a 33-year-old Black transgender woman, was shot and killed in Augusta, Georgia.

Michelle Michellyn Ramos Vargas, a transgender woman from Puerto Rico in her mid-30s, was found fatally shot Sept. 30 in San Germán, Puerto Rico. Two days earlier, Mia Green, 29, a Black transgender woman was killed in Philadelphia.

Aerrion Burnett, a 37-year-old Black transgender woman, was found dead of a gunshot wound on Sept. 19 in Independence, Missouri.

A June 2020 report from Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund and Equality Florida found that 2018 saw a 41% increase in reported crimes directed against transgender individuals.

While just 16% of the trans population in the U.S. is estimated to be Black, 79% of known trans homicide victims were Black, the report showed.

And in 2017, which held the previous high of transgender murders of 29, 71% of victims of hate violence were people of color, 52% were transgender and 40% were transgender women of color, according to a report from the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs that year.

Many advocates fighting racial, gender identity, and women’s rights, point to the rise in divisive language from the current occupant of the White House.

Trump has made it ok for those who’ve held onto personal bigotries to feel comfortable enought to “come out of the closet”, so to speak.

This Nov. 3rd, we have a chance to evict the tenant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. It’s time to be lead by Biden/Harris, who, while under Obama, has a record or supporting Trans and LGBTQ communites.
