All you supermodels of the world unite. All the pageant followers get ready. The transgender pageant of pageants has begun. Thailand’s Miss International Queen is set for crowning, March the 9th. Most countries have their national titles; the US, Miss Continental, the UK, Miss Transgender UK etc., but the worlds largest collection of the worlds most dedicated pageant ladies is Thailand’s Miss International Queen. Women from all over the world with national titles, descend upon Pattaya, Thailand for the worlds most prestigious title. Over the years it has been a vocal advocate for LGBT rights, and in particular Transgender rights throughout Thailand. The television event of the Miss International pageant in Thailand is as watched and followed by the citizens of Thailand as much as the Miss Universe and Miss USA are for many in the states. Monetary
profits of the actual televised show go to the Royal Charity AIDS Foundation of Thailand.
After rumors of trans celebrities, from nearly every country, entering first will be Vietnam’s Huong Giang Idol.² She was born in 1991, and the singer drew public attention after entering top 4 of Vietnam Idol 2012. She was also named among top 4 of Remix New Generation, in Vietnam.
Vietnamese representative Huong Giang put in a strong performance in the talent competition at the international transgender pageant in Thailand. She chose to perform the song “Hush Hush” by the famous group The Pussycat Dolls for singing in the competition. Huong Giang Idol, partly because of her fame in Vietnam as a pop singer, is the media favorite. Yet, as anyone knows pageants know, the show isn’t over until the diva is Crowned.
Twenty-eight girls compete for the title, yet many even in the trans community see little significance or purpose for these type of pageants. In fact, many would say it’s a burden to our community. Many trans pageants sadly, especially in America, are considered a hindrance to trans equality. While many are ran through gay bars for the wealth of gay owners, pageants like Miss International Queen do far more than place a crown and a couple of hundred bucks in the hands of trans women, they uplift transgender visibility, educate and push the acceptance of transgender women beyond the limits of the streets of Thailand and give them an opportunity. After collecting tens of thousands of dollars, many finally are able to complete transition and most become celebrities in their countries, going into acting roles, advocacy work, politics or singing careers. Most importantly, each time a bigot sees an entire nation celebrate the beauty, diversity, and strength of trans women, we all no matter what part of the world, are better for it.
Kudos to Miss International Queen and we look forward to the lucky lady that will reign for a new year.
